Caliber is a free program for ebook management on laptops/computers. Like a library, we can sort ebooks by title, author, size, date making it easier to search.
Caliber was published on October 31, 2006, following the release of the SONY PRS 500, the first reader-based electric ink e-ink to be sold commercially in the USA.
Sony did not initially cooperate with Linux, the operating system of choice Kovid Goyal decided to reverse engineer the USB protocol used, to make it work on Linux. This was done with the help of the folks from the MobileRead company and calibre was born.
If we have many ebooks and are confused about which book to look for, we can also use the Search facility to make it easier for us to find the desired ebook.
At that time there was no tool to convert content to LRF format commonly used by SONY readers, so Kovid decided to implement a converter to convert the most popular book E-format to LRF. this converter proved to be very popular and much better than previous SONY outputs. Caliber is in demand and used by various content publishers to produce the first generation of books in LRF format.
With a very simple appearance, this ebook organizer can group ebooks based on: title, author, date added (the date we added the ebook), date published (the date the ebook was published), size, rating, series , Language etc. We can also sort Ebooks by Comment or Tag.
With Caliber we can also convert ebook formats so that they can be read by electronic devices, which are sometimes limited to certain formats.
Supported formats such as: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT , ODT, PRC**, RTF, TXT, EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, SNB, TCR.
Another advantage of Caliber is that it takes news from websites or RSS feeds to be used as ebooks.
Examples of supported news sites: Kompas, Detik, New York Times, ESPN, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Times, and Jakarta Post.
