Greenfoot is an integrated development environment that makes it easy to write games and simulations in the Java programming language. It comes with a bunch of demo scripts and documentation that helps beginners get started very quickly.
Greenfoot can be used to learn or teach programming, or just to put a fun game on a website. (Yes, Greenfoot can export games to a website!) Originally developed for school-age students, but is now used by all age groups.
The UI offers all the tools one would expect from any IDE: you can manage projects, apply syntax highlighting patterns, and more. However, the design is simple enough to be easy to use even by novice programmers.
The best part is that the project comes with a variety of online resources: a green room where teachers can share ideas and a library where you can share your projects or comment on Applications developed by others.
