Guide How to Download Imagery on SAS Planet for Beginners

What is SAS Planet? SAS Planet is a free application to view and download satellite maps from several services such as Google Earth, Google Maps, Bing Maps, DigitalGlobe, Kosmosnimki, Yandex.maps, and others. In this article, I will explain how to download imagery on SAS Planet.

With this application, you can get high-resolution images that can even be accessed offline because they are stored on your computer (if downloaded). Downloaded image files can also be saved in several formats such as JPEG, and TIFF. For further explanation, let's see the explanation below.

How to Download Image on SAS Planet


Before going into the steps of downloading the image, first of all, you have to download the SAS Planet app on your PC and install it. Below are the steps to download and install SAS Planet.

  1. Go to this link to download SAS Planet. Download the latest version of the SAS Planet application on the website.
  2. Because the file is in the form of RAR, it must be extracted first by right-clicking the file and then clicking Extract files.
  3. Open the folder from SAS Planet. Then, scroll down until you find the SASPlanet application file. Double click the file to install it.
  4. Wait for this application to finish loading.
  5. Display SAS Planet for the first time will look.
  6. In this example, I will use Satellite Bing. The trick is to click the Satellite dropdown menu and then click Bing ->> Bing Maps – satellite.
  7. The result will look like in the image below. To enlarge the map and find the desired object, you can use the Zoom feature on the left side.

Download Image with Rectangular Selection


Rectangular Selection is a way to select a map area using a box. The following are the steps to download an image with a rectangular selection.

  1. Select the map location you want to download.
  2. Click the selection icon on the menu and then click Rectangular Selection.
  3. Drag the squares on the map to form the selection area. The part of the map that is entered in the box will be the area to be downloaded.
  4. After that, later, automatically, the Selection Manager window will appear. Open the Stick tab and select the type of output format, here I choose GeoTIFF. Then, select the image storage directory by clicking on the three-dot icon on the right side (marked by number 1).
  5. Select the Zoom value, the larger the value, the more detailed/clear the image will be, but the download process will take longer, and vice versa (marked by number 2). Then, for Projection, click the Geographic… option. (marked by number 3). Type “TIFF” in the Format field (marked by number 4).
  6. To download the image, click the Start button.
  7. The satellite image you want has been successfully downloaded. Display the image on the computer will look like in this image.

Download Image with Visible Area


Visible Area means selecting the entire visible area. The following are the steps to download an image with a visible area.

  1. Select the area you want to download.
  2. Click the selection icon on the menu and then click Visible Area.
  3. Now, automatically, all areas that appear on SAS Planet will be selected and the Selection Manager window will appear. Open the Stick tab and select the type of output format, here I choose JPEG. Then, select the image storage directory by clicking the three-dot icon on the right side as indicated by the arrow in the image.
  4. Select the storage directory and enter the file name. Click the Save button.
  5. Select the Zoom value, here I choose number 15 (marked by number 1). Then, for Projection, click the Geographic… option. (marked by number 2). Increase the quality percentage to 100% (marked by number 3). In number 4, check the types of georeferencing files you want such as .map, .dat, .kml, and .tab (optional).
  6. To download the image, click the Start button as indicated by the arrow in the image below.
  7. Wait until the process is complete.
  8. Display the image on the computer will look like in this image.
  9. The storage directory will look.
